RILEY, Noreen. Letter from HMS Inflexible.
Noreen Riley is the daughter of Joseph Riley who joined the 2/5th Linclon Regiment and went to fight in 1917. As a school child she was encouraged to write to those away and send a food parcel. She wrote on 23rd September 1918 and mentioned the condition of her own father. His story is provided in "Those who Returned". Below is the reply from HMS Inflexible dated 2nd November 1918. The envelope was postmarked 7th Nov 18 indicating that there was an efficient sustem for collecting and delivering post. The men must have appreciated receiving letters as enclosed with the reply was a cap ribbon which Noreen kept.

Yarm Commemoration Group ________________
The 1914 - 1918 war, often called the Great war was thought to be the war to end all wars. How wrong that turned out to be. Nearly 1 million British soldiers lost their lives and over 2 million were injured. Yarm Commemorative Group has been established to research those from Yarm who gave their lives in WW1, the effect on the families living in Yarm and to bring this research to the current generations living in Yarm. This will be achieved through providing research material to primary and secondary schools and providing activities for all the family throughout the period 2014 to 2018.
This will not be a time for celebration but a time for commemoration.
